Since September 2000 students have been required to study up to three or four subjects at AS Level (called 'A1') in their first year and three at A Level (called 'A2') in their second year. For a typical course outline click here.

Many music courses are changing to meet new requirements, although there will be some similarities with the more traditional music A Level courses.

MUSIC � AS Level

What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course?

Students considering this music course should be able to:

read music!

perform to a reasonable standard on at least one instrument;

compose a piece of music in a style of their own choice;

have a basic understanding of ICT and be prepared to develop ICT skills in Music Technology.

What will I learn from this type of course?

The courses are flexible and will allow students to make choices according to their strengths.

A wide range of skills and techniques will be developed allowing you to;

improve your ability to perform;

enhance and expand methods of composition;

research and specialise in an area of music that interests you;

use Music Technology as a compositional tool;

broaden your knowledge and understanding of different styles and types of music.

What kind of student are these courses suitable for?

There is no prescribed prior knowledge. However, students who undertake the course should show themselves capable of operating at a level of practice and understanding equivalent to that required for GCSE Music.

Music at AS Level is suitable for:

students who have studied Music at GCSE and wish to develop their skills and understanding;

students wishing to gain an AS or A Level alongside a BTEC National Diploma Course or a GNVQ Advanced Diploma;

students wishing to study Music, Popular Music or a Combined Arts subject in Higher Education;

students wishing to pursue a vocation in Music, and/or the Arts.
